What is EPAScada?

EPAScada is an application that dynamically tracks and analyzes hydraulic changes on the water supply distribution system to control losses.

EPAScada is the interaction of EPAnet as a hydraulic modeling application and SCADA monitoring and control system. The results of this interaction appear in the Google Maps environment with additional functional menus, turning Google Maps into a tool that combines GIS, EPANET and SCADU into aunique functional entity that defines leak location locations in a simple, interactive way.

Everything takes place in real-time with the actual data obtained from the SCADA system. This approach to controlling losses is a state of the art in solving this problem because first time monitoring of losses is done as real-time simulation rather than historical data, as it has been customary so far.

Given that insight into historical data is an important element, so a special part of the EPAspace application deals with historical data representation for the purpose of easier resource management and water supply infrastructure.

How and what EPAScada does?

Measure data from water supply facilities (flow, pressure, pump and valve status, water level, residual chlorine measurements etc.) by using the telemetry system to SCADA application in real time. The EPAS program code transforms these data into input data into the EPAnet simulation model of the relevant distribution area, compares the simulation results to EPAnet’s measured values, and defines the leakage site. The hydraulic model fault quality increases system sensitivity, and this approach also allows calibration of the hydraulic model with real-time data in real and unmanaged conditions. It is also clear to the laity that constant calibration of the model will be able to identify the smallest leaks in the system and follow the same continuously, regardless of the season and changing the consumption regime as a consequence of industry involvement.

Showing the results obtained from EPAnet, the EPAScada application enables a user interface that is identical to the Google Maps
interactive interface, expanded with additional menus, which provide all the functionality needed to detect losses.

Such Human Machine interface is selected precisely to allow the user an easy and quick insight into the state of the system. The red color of the pipeline is a mistake of the potential leakage point, black is the basic direction of the water flow in the pipeline while blue represents the reverse direction.

The basic display shows suspicious leakage sites and provides instant insight into geographic locations of problematic pipelines.

The same interface can show all the current status of the water supply network, potential losses on specific parts of the grid as well as the detailed characteristics of the individual parts of the network (valves, pipes …).
